Understand that Google has had 3 brand new algorithms since 2011: Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird.
Here is a brief overview on what each algorithm did and what it affected.
- Panda – Targeted websites with low quality content. First change occurred in April 2011.
- Penguin – This is the algorithm change that hurt the most because it targeted websites that had been using black hat seo, paid links and links generally poor in quality.
- Hummingbird – This was not designed to penalize websites but to provide a better search experience and was designed to act more like a human being rather then a typical search engine.
Since, Google updates these algorithms over 300 times every year small fluctuations in rankings will happen, we call this the “Google Dance”. A Google dance is very common and nothing to be alarmed about but when you check your Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools and start to see a steady drop off in rankings and overall traffic from the organic search results, there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Try and pin point when this dip in rankings occurred.
Look at the provided timeline of Google Algorithm changes and updates and see if you might have been caught in one of these many refreshes.
